SIXTEEN TRUE CHRISTIAN HERO STORIES

Specifically for Readers Ages 5 to 9.

The Christian "Heroes For Young Readers" books are not fiction. They are true stories about real people. They tell the stories of Christians who chose to follow God and serve him, no matter what the costs. Some, like Corrie Ten Boom, served God quietly in her community of Harlem, Holland for most of her life, until the Nazi invasion made her and her family answer a very hard question, “Would they be willing to lay down their lives to save the lives of their Jewish neighbors?” Corrie Ten Boom

Corrie’s life, and her family’s sacrifice, all serve as shining examples of God’s grace in times of great trials. Other stories inspire children in other ways. George Müller challenges us to have faith that God will provide when he calls us to a task—no matter how big that task may be.

George Müller George Müller was a minister who knew he was called to missions. He was called, but not by traveling overseas as he originally imagined. God made George’s mission his own backyard of Bristol, England, reaching out to the poor orphans who lived in the streets. George was not a wealthy man, but he learned much about God’s ability to provide, trusting God to feed and clothe over 10,000 orphans he would care for in his lifetime. Literally, he had Faith to Feed Ten Thousand.

With sixteen books in the series, there are stories to inspire everyone—boys and girls, moms and dads. Two stories in the series, Nate Saint and Jim Elliot, tell of two young men who served God and loved their neighbors by bringing the message of God’s love to the remote corners of Ecuador. As missionaries to remote jungles, their stories are stories of adventure. Nate, a pilot, brought supplies and medicine to people who might otherwise have received no help.

Nate Saint Jim--a minister who trained in basic health care--built churches, clinics, and schools in the jungle—some served by airstrips built to land Nate’s plane. Both lives culminated in an attempt to reach and assist the remote, mysterious, and violent Auca peoples. Jim Elliot

All sixteen books in the series are beautifully illustrated in original watercolor paintings by Bryan Pollard.

Bryan Pollard - Illustration from Nate Saint I had the pleasure of originally meeting Bryan Pollard over 30 years ago while we were both working in missions in Germany. Bryan is an incredibly gifted artist and teacher, who served many years himself in the mission field, and treats each painting prayerfully as part of his continuing mission. Bryan has filled each book with over fifteen original, brilliant, and beautiful watercolor illustrations.

The Patience of Children

Adults may enjoy reading a hero book once or twice, but children like hearing a great story again and again and again. When the story teaches positive values, this is especially to be embraced and encouraged. In order to make it easy for your children to hear the story over and over again--without driving the parent, teacher, or grandparent crazy--I have created a set of companion CDs for the books. Each CD contains ten songs, the reading of four books with a bell sound to indicate the page turn, and a fun quiz song called “Can You Name the Hero?”

My father and daughter both joined me in producing the CD.

Parents, teachers, and grandparents have told me that they enjoy hearing the CD because it provides a solid example of how the rhyme and rhythm of the books is to be properly read. (The simple trick is to just read it like any other text that is written in prose.) The CDs are also great for family outings and vacations, as each CD provides an hour of positive stories that serve to inspire the whole family.

Fun, Games and Learning

Christian school teachers, Sunday school teachers, parents, and grandparents have all requested additional materials to complement the reading and reinforce the stories. YWAM Publishing—just this year—has finally published a collection of fun, interesting, and educational activities to accompany the books. I’ve personally tested each and every activity in the guides with several homeschool and Sunday school classes I’ve been teaching for the past three years. The activities are kid tested and mother approved, and include songs, creative crafts, character recognition crafts, crossword puzzles, rhyming games, story comprehension games, maps, coloring pages, and more. More than one parent has approached me saying my class is now their child’s favorite. Sign up for my free mini-seminar on teaching classes children love, and learn even more secrets you can use with my books.

Currently there are four activity guides that cover the first sixteen books.
